Brendan graduated Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from University of Queensland and was a medical officer in the Royal Australian Air Force for six years before completing his Ophthalmology training in New Zealand where he was fortunate to train under and with many of you, and comes back most years to teach registrars at Dunedin’s RACE course. He completed vitreoretinal fellowships in Auckland, Brighton UK and at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital before returning to Tasmania in 2004 where he provides services in vitreoretinal diseases, medical retina and cataract (especially complex cataracts).
Brendan is Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Tasmania and has over 100 peer review publications and 2 educational CD’s. Brendan with wife Michelle established in 2008 a registered charity - Tasmanian Eye Institute, pursuing his passion for research, education and community service in Ophthalmology. Radical truth and transparency are familiar drives for Brendan’s globally impacting research such as into femtosecond laser in cataract surgery. When Brendan last spoke here in New Zealand he highlighted Tasmanian Eye Institute’s commitment to developing Australia’s first dedicated ophthalmic CRISPR gene therapy centre run by Professor Alex Hewitt in Hobart.
Our agenda:
